We are fans of the engineers and inventors who made closed captioning possible — it's elegant, it's simple, it's clever. Captioning was developed along with teletext as a way of adding extra information in the unseen part of a broadcast TV signal, in the VBI, or vertical blanking interval. Closed caption information is located on the 21st line of the VBI. With digital tv, the VBI ceases to exist, but we'll keep our name as a nod to the ingenuity of the developers of closed captioning... and as a memento of our earlier days.
